Emergency services descended on a shopping centre in Japan on Monday (June 8) following reports of individuals suffering from eye and throat discomfort. At least 16 people reported feeling unwell with some needing hospital treatment.

Police stated that at approximately 5:30pm., a security guard at the “Mozo Wonder City” commercial complex in Nishi Ward, Nagoya City, alerted emergency services.

They reported that several people were experiencing eye irritation and coughing. Investigators have noted that numerous individuals complained of discomfort in their eyes and throats, while it was also reported that someone was coughing within an arcade area on the fourth floor.

Authorities confirmed that at least six people have been taken to hospital. Officials, including police and firefighters, are persistently investigating the situation to identify the cause and evaluate any potential hazards.

According to Japanese news source NHK, police the six people included employees and customers. They were taken to the hospital with ‘mild symptoms’ and were ‘conscious’.

The fire department said 16 people, ranging in age from babies to people in their 40s, were complaining of coughing and sore throats.

The six sent to hospital included a woman in her 40s and a girl under 10.

Speaking to NTV, one person at the scene said: “The moment I entered (the game center), my throat started to hurt, and a staff member told me, ‘You’re coughing, so you should leave,’ and I thought I was the only one feeling unwell, but then I realized that everyone else’s throat was hurting, and then people started leaving, so I thought I should leave too and left the store.”

The fire department has cordoned off part of the fourth floor and is dealing with the situation, but so far, no toxic gases or smoke have been detected.

The location refers to a substantial shopping and entertainment complex situated roughly 500 metres from Kami-Otai Station, making it readily accessible via public transport.

It encompasses a range of facilities such as a cinema, eateries, retail shops, and other businesses, serving as a bustling hub where many people congregate for shopping, dining, and leisure pursuits, reports the Express.
